For over 30 years Playa Ocotal and Playas del Coco have been the hub of Guanacaste’s world class scuba diving. Playa Ocotal is strategically located between the Catalina Islands and the Bat islands, two of Costa Rica’s most famous dive sites.
Rocket Frog Divers has a 36 ft Apex Rib boat equipped with twin 300 horsepower Yamaha outboard motors. The dive boat is built to handle 20 divers or 32 snorkelers. The boat is manned by a 5 person crew. Collectively, Rocket Frog’s dive crew has been exploring Northern Guanacaste dive sites for over 30 years.
Los Almendros de Ocotal is a perfect location for divers:
- It is the closest residential development to Ocotal Bay where dive companies moor their boats.
- The boat launch area is less than 200 yards from the entrance to Los Almendros.
- Divers have only a 2-3 minute walk from their condo to Rocket Frog’s dive shop and equipment storage area.
- Rocket Frog instructors train divers in Los Almendros’ main swimming pool.
- Diving equipment is stored in a secure location, less than 200 yards from the launch site.
- Rocket Frog dive planners work on-site at Los Almendros.
- Father Rooster’s bar/restaurant is located next door to Los Almendros (Open for lunch and dinner).
- Los Almendros is less than a 10 minute drive to Playas del Coco’s excellent restaurants, sports bars and night clubs.
Rocket Frog is a full service dive shop. They conduct day and night time scuba diving tours, offer PADI scuba diving certifications, and provide PADI certified scuba diving instruction. Rocket Frog Diver’s knowledge of Guanacaste dive sites coupled with their excellent teaching skills and top quality diving equipment has enabled the company to develop a loyal following.
Many experienced divers have a “bucket list” that includes the Bat and Catalina Islands. These island groups are located in the Gulf of Papagayo, 21 and 14 miles from Playa Ocotal. Each of these dive sites presents unique challenges for experienced divers. Rocket Frog’s Apex Rib boat is Guanacaste’s fastest dive boat. The boat travels at speeds up to 45 knots. Rocket Frog can transport divers to the Bat and Catalina islands in less than half the time required by other Playas del Coco and Playa Ocotal dive shops.
The BAT ISLANDS (Islas Murcielagos), are advanced dives with Bull Sharks, Black Tips and the occasional Tiger Shark. The maximum depth is approximately 100 ft. The diving is pristine. Expect to see parrotfish, angelfish, clown shrimp, hog fish and several other species. Divers also enjoy exploring bridges, caverns, coral and sponges.
CATALINA ISLAND is a rocky island cluster 2-8 miles off the coast. The waters surrounding the Catalina Islands are home to many species of marine life; Sea turtles, giant Manta Rays, Moray eels, Stingrays, White-tip and Bull sharks, Barracuda, and the occasional Tiger Shark. The Catalina Islands boast a wide variety of schooling tropical fish. It is not unusual for divers to find themselves surrounded by huge migratory schools of various species of rays.
Local dives, for divers of all experience levels, depart daily at 8:00AM, 1:30PM and 5:00PM. Rental equipment is available. Rocket Frog is a authorized dealer of XSxcuba equipment and Nitrox. Scuba accessories can be purchased on-site in the Rocket Frog business office.
