2. Convenient Beach Front Location:
No long Walks to the beach:
Long walks to the beach carrying coolers, beach towels and snorkeling gear diminishes, what would otherwise be, a delightful vacation experience. All Los Almendros condos are only a 2-3 minute walk to the beach.
Many tours depart from Playa Ocotal: Fishing, diving, snorkeling and other ocean tours depart daily from Playa Ocotal, 200 yards from the entrance to Los Almendros de Ocotal resort. If friends or family members prefer not to participate in an ocean activity, the rental vehicle is available for shopping or to enjoy one of Guanacaste’s many land based activities.
Lack of public facilities:
Playa Ocotal is a very small and intimate beach. Playa Ocotal does not have any public restrooms, drinking fountains,…. Having a beachfront condo only 2-3 minutes from the beach is convenient for families with children.
Restaurant Next Door:
The popular Father Rooster’s restaurant is next door to Los Almendros de Ocotal. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner. Father Rooster’s serves good food and excellent drinks in a casual atmosphere. The bilingual wait staff is friendly and very attentive. Father Rooster’s is a great place to enjoy your favorite tropical drink while watching a beautiful Costa Rican sunset.

Guanacaste is known for its excellent family beaches. Playa Hermosa, Playa Panama and Playa Ocotal are three of the best. Playa Ocotal is a Blue Flag beach that has a gentle surf and no dangerous riptides. The surf is usually calm enough for children to swim with adult supervision. Playa Ocotal is an excellent choice for individuals and couples who, enjoy the ocean, but are not strong swimmers. Good snorkeling from shore is difficult to find in Costa Rica. Northern Guanacaste has several magnificent beaches that are protected from the pounding ocean surf by the Papagayo Peninsula. All of these beaches provide excellent swimming. However, Costa Rica travel guides recommend Playa Ocotal for snorkeling.
Playa Ocotal has near-shore rock formations that attract a variety of aquatic life and are easily accessed by snorkelers. The best snorkeling is around the rock formations directly below Los Almendros de Ocotal. Snorkeling equipment can be rented from Rocket Frog Diver’s office in Los Almendros.
Advanced Snorkelers:
Experienced snorkelers enjoy exploring the waters North of Playa Ocotal. This very unique area is one of the best snorkeling sites in Costa Rica that is accessible from shore.

Trip type: Couples
Growing up in Hawaii led to a decades-long quest for the best beach in the world, and Playa Ocotal is now at the top of the list. This is a squeaky-clean, black and white sand beach with an abundance of tidal pools and offshore marine life, complemented by a sea cave and a blow-hole, all within its span of 500 meters. Snorkel in crystal-clear water around the rocks at either end of the beach and you will be rewarded and surprised every single day. This was a secluded, quiet get-away for us that will never be forgotten.
The accommodations at Los Almendros are superb. It is an impeccably clean, safe, guarded community consisting of 43 widely-spaced, completely furnished units. The competent office staff is multi-lingual, more than willing to help with any question or request, and you will find that they really become your trusted friends after a few emails, even before you arrive. They are not faking it–that is how they truly feel. The pictures you see online do not do justice to this place. Commercial marketers and hawkers have not yet feasted on Los Almendros. I hope they never do.
If you´re looking for an active night life, there is one restaurant near the beach, but many others are close–a ten minute, $5 taxi ride to Coco. After three weeks, we are sad to leave.

- Close to zip-lines, horseback riding, golfing, waterfalls, hot springs, mud baths, tubing & canyoning
- 2 hours north of leatherback turtle nesting sites
- Serviced by Interbus. Interbus operates air conditioned vans and offers door-to-door service from Los Almendros to Arenal, Manual Antonio, San Jose and other popular vacation destinations.
10. Knowledgeable Vacation Planners On Site
Los Almendros de Ocotal’s General Manager (Nino) has been helping tourists plan Guanacaste vacation activities for over 20 years. Nino knows the best tour operators in Guanacaste. He is often able to get guests at Los Almendros better rates for fishing, snorkeling and zip-line canopy tours than are available on-line. Nino and his assistant Stefani speak excellent English. Take advantage of their experience to ensure that you are assigned an experienced, bilingual guide with a reputation for providing excellent customer service.
